Day 82 Inverarnan to Tyndrum - 13.7 miles
Now who was it that suggested that late night whisky tasting!!??
At least we all slept well - including Aaron.
Paul, Carolyn and Aaron were setting off again on a complicated return trip by bus to Glasgow airport via Balloch and Drymen. Fingers crossed all the connections would work.
Sally and I set off in the opposite direction and enjoyed a couple of hours of dry weather with occasional sunshine,
walking up Glen Falloch towards Crianlarich.
It wasn't long before we could see rain clouds quickly catching us up along the valley and within minutes we were caught in a prolonged shower which lasted for the remainder of the day.
At some point in the forest we stopped for a picnic lunch but there was no beating those midges who turned out in sufficient number to encourage us to move on pretty quickly!
Eventually out of the forest, we passed the site of St Fillan's priory - an 8th Century celtic monk who apparently had a 'luminous arm'.....the remains of which played a significant part in the defeat of Edward II at Bannickburn.
...and the rain stopped!
Apparently, this is one of the wettest places in the UK. The Met Office has a weather station - Kirkton and Auchtertyre parked alongside the priory which shows that this area has more than 100 inches of rain per annum and it rains on average 280 days of the year.
Our route passed close to Lochan nan Arm, a small loch where Robert the Bruce is supposed to have thrown his 1m long Claymore sword when escaping from the Macdougals at the battle of Dalrigh.
Many have tried to find it, but it was still raining when we passed by so we sped on to our hotel at Tyndrum.
Total distance walked so far = 1021.5 miles
Total ascent so far = 119 306 feet
