Day 80 Drymen to Rowardennan - 17.5 miles

Paul, Caroline and Aaron had come to join me for the second time on the walk, the last time was a glorious day in Padstow on Day 7. 

After the transport challenges of yesterday, they'd all survived the night with bags of enthusiasm for the day's walking. 
But what a welcome to Scotland!? - the prospect of rain and more rain.
After a relaxed breakfast we headed off into the rain.
The biggest ascent of the day was Conic Hill
 (almost 1200 feet) which was fast disappearing into the cloud and increasing rain.
The trail passed close to the summit where we met
Adam a National Park Ranger and volunteers Sophie. Ryan and
Ewan who'd all been on the hill since early morning digging ditches to take away some of the surface water that exacerbates a lot of the erosion to the paths.

After a steep and slippery descent, we stopped for a welcome break and lunch (and Irn Bru for the grown ups) at the coffee shop at Balmaha
on the shores of Loch Lomond and tried -unsuccesfully-to dry off some our clothes before setting off for the afternoon for the second half of our walk.

The sun came out briefly before the rain
started again as we arrived at Rowardennan 
with promising views along the Loch - an uplifting prospect for tomorrow.
Total distance walked so far = 991.8 miles
Total ascent so far = 116 400 feet

Dunrobin Castle came well recommended - particularly the gardens to which you could get in for free. Well, not today you can't.....unless you want a tour of the Castle as well! Pah! Last few days

Only just a few days remaining before heading North(ish) from Lands' End at the weekend. Having Covid over the last week hasn't helped in the final preps but gradually the T line has been getting fainter so I've pressed the ignition switch and I'm warming the engines!!

Day 109 - Orkney

Helen dropped us off at the Ness of Brodgar - a live archaeological dig of a large site that was discovered only a few years ago. Because of the risk of weather erosion to the dig and the availability of student archaeologists to help with the back-breaking excavation, the site is only open for 7 weeks before it gets covered again until next Summer. There are valuable finds being made almost every day. You could sense the enthusiasm and excitement in the air at the gradual and careful unearthing of crucial finds. We walked via the Stones of Steness  to catch the bus to Kirkwall. The ferry port has connections to some of the other Northern Orcadian islands - Eday, Westray and Sanday from which there are further ferries to others.
