Day 78 - Falkirk to Lennoxtown - 9.3 miles

Chaos and confusion. Train strikes and bus replacement services!!
Walking down to Haymarket station we crossed over the canal and watched a guy magnet fishing.
In five minutes we watched him retrieve the metal spout of an old kettle and a road sign!

We eventually caught a bus from Edinburgh to Linlithgow and a train onwards to Croy where we started our walk.

The John Muir trail initially follows the line of  Antonine Wall
and the remains of some Roman forts particularly Principia. 
It then follows the Forth & Clyde canal to Kirkintilloch where it turned sharply north and quickly became more rural in character
before it picked up Glazert water and led to our hotel.

Total distance walked so far = 957.7 miles
Total ascent so far = 113 169 feet

Day 37 - Cross Foxes to Penmaenpool - 11.4 miles

I wanted to walk over Cadair Idris but knew it'd be totally dependent on the weather. Poor visibility or low cloud at the summit would be disorientating and not for me. It had rained heavily throughout the night and the cloud forecast was that it would clear for a short period in the middle of the day. I thought I'd try to get closer to have a look and get a feel for the conditions. The rain had eased but paths were waterlogged. The summit was visible for a few minutes then it would disappear again in cloud.  I walked a couple of miles to join the Cambrian Way - a recognised route and walked up Mynydd Gwerngraig to 1400 ft from here I was going have a look and decide. Stupidly, I'd thought I'd take a shortcut and hoofed my way across boggy moorland and leg breaking tussocks before I managed to get back on to the route. Day 99 - Golspie to Helmsdale - 18.6 miles

Dunrobin Castle came well recommended - particularly the gardens to which you could get in for free. Well, not today you can't.....unless you want a tour of the Castle as well! Pah! Not being in the mood for a guided tour of a stately home even if it was designed by Charles Barry  - who designed the Houses of Parliament, I walked down on to the beach and watched a busy chaffinch and admired a nice gate catch instead! Much more ME!! Near Strathsteven I met Graham and his family.  Graham is a retired businessman and keen amateur geologist. He was looking for ammonites and particularly belemnites which he told me are the fossilised remains of giant squid that once occupied the sea here.
