Day 8 - Padstow
This has been a 'rest day' before Sally heads back home tomorrow morning so we've had a relaxed day enjoying the sights of the town.
It's really interesting how each of the four tourist 'hotspots' we've passed through in the last week seem to have their own distinct characters.
Mousehole felt very gentle and - at least when we saw it, quite calm.
St.Ives was full-on touristy during the day and felt geared up for day trippers with busy narrow pedestrianised streets.
Newquay comes across as a party town with a lot of groups likely to be probably a popular stag or hen weekend place. There was a Guiness pub near our accommodation which may have contributed to this impression!
Padstow is an out and out food place - with TV chefs' themed restaurants, cafes, or shops competing cheek by jowl.
Padstow has its own lobster research station and hatchery. In the visitor centre it was interesting to read how lobsters feed at night and tend to remain hidden during the day. Apparently in addition to their mouths, they have taste sensors on their legs and antennae which they waft in the darkness to generate a 3D taste picture of their prey. That's another reason why my enjoyment of the sea will definitely remain at the surface rather than in the darker depths!!
We certainly enjoyed our dinners on both nights with this evening at Caffè Rojanos being particularly good and the service enthusiastic and fun. I'd be very happy to spend a fortnight here and do a complete survey if anyone would like to commission a full report!!
